Chief Kevin M. Faller and the Melrose Police Department invite community members to take part in a virtual presentation on Jan. 18 regarding online safety for children.

“Keeping Kids Safe and Secure Online: A Project Safe Childhood Presentation for Parents,” will be offered by the U.S. Attorney’s Office and Homeland Security Investigations on Wednesday, Jan. 18, from 6:30-7:30 p.m.

Predators use gaming and social media to groom children with the intent of exploiting them sexually online or for in-person meetings. The presentation will focus on prevention by educating parents and community members how to help keep children safe online.

Panelists will be Assistant U.S. Attorney Anne Paruti, HSI Special Agent Andrew Kelleher, and Victim Witness Specialist Lauryn Myers. Topics include: Social Media 101 and the Digital Footprint; Cyberbullying; Sexting; Gaming; Victim Support; and Protecting Against Online Predation.

“This is a timely and informative presentation about the dangers around our children every day,” Chief Faller said. “We hope that parents and guardians, anyone who works with children, and anyone who would like to know more about online dangers will attend and leave with useful tips.”

The presentation is free. Those interested in attending are asked to register here. The event password is: PSC1

Anyone with questions or anyone having difficulty registering is asked to contact Karen Legace at USAMA.PSCOutreach@usdoj.gov.
