Patrol Officer Joseph Paul Martin

End of Watch: Friday June 6, 1969

Melrose Police Officer Joseph Paul Martin suffered a heart attack on May 31st 1969 and died after a foot pursuit of two suspects.

After the foot chase Officer Martin returned to his vehicle and complained of chest pains. He finished his shift and as soon as he got home he asked his wife to take him to the hospital, where he remained for six days until his death.
Officer Martin, age 46, had been employed with the Melrose Police Department for ten years and was survived by his wife and two children.

Crossing Guard Mary M. Foley

End of Watch: Thursday September 5 1985

Melrose Police Department Crossing Guard Mary M. Foley made the ultimate sacrifice on Thursday September 5 1985. Crossing Guard Foley was struck and fatally injured by a motor vehicle as she pushed a group of children to the safety of the sidewalk. Crossing Guard Foley, age 58, was the mother of 10 children, grandmother to 19 children and had been employed by the City of Melrose for 25 years.
