MELROSE — The Melrose Police Department is investigating after shots were fired at a vehicle Friday afternoon.

At approximately 3 p.m., Melrose Police were dispatched to the area near the intersection of Mount Vernon Avenue and Mount Vernon Street following a report of shots fired.

Upon arrival, officers initiated an on-scene investigation through which they determined that a suspect — described as a black male, about six feet tall, wearing a Chicago Bulls jacket and sweatpants — fired at least two rounds in the direction of a vehicle. The vehicle then fled from the scene, and the shooter fled on foot southbound on Main Street.

Melrose Police believe the shooter and an unknown number of occupants inside the vehicle were known to each other, and that there is no threat to the community stemming from this incident. Melrose Police are not aware of anyone who was injured as a result of the shots fired.

A Melrose Police K-9 Unit responded to the scene to support efforts to investigate the incident. The incident remains under investigation at this time, and no further information is currently available.
