MELROSE — At approximately 1 p.m. Sunday, Melrose Police responded to Swains Pond after a couple walking in the area called police after finding material they believed may have been human remains.  

An on-scene investigation by police determined that the material was squid fish bait, which was subsequently disposed of by police. Swains Pond is a popular fishing spot in the area.

The Massachusetts State Police CPAC Unit also responded. Residents may have noticed a large police presence in the area during the afternoon. There is no danger to the area and the scene has been cleared.
