Chief Michael Lyle of the Melrose Police Department is excited to announce the 2021 Junior Police Academy. This Melrose Police tradition with the community’s youth will consist of four separate one week academy classes, each having 25 cadets. All applicants must be between 4th grade and 8th grade, as well as being a Melrose resident. The days will start at 0830 and end at 1230. The days will require all cadets to participate in every activity/event, including morning PT (physical training) with a Melrose Police Officer. All cadets are expected to be on their best behavior and maintain respect for the Officers and fellow academy mates.

During the week cadets will meet several of Melrose’s finest; including Patrolman, Detectives, K9 and Handler, Traffic Officer, Prosecutor, Bicycle Unit Members, and for the soon to be Middle Schoolers the School Resource Officers. Additionally, there will be many opportunities to get up and close with some of the equipment and emergency vehicles, as well as a full day with Melrose Fire Department. The instruction periods will educate on dozens of topics from internet safety, the dangers of drugs, traffic safety, as well as learning what Melrose Police does every day to keep our city safe.

Applications will be available at the Melrose Police front desk or by clicking here. Applications can be dropped off at MPD or with School Resource Officers. For questions please contact Sgt. Nikolaus MacIntosh (nmacintosh@cityofmelrose.org) or School Resource Officer James Applegate (japplegate@cityofmelrose.org).
