MELROSE — The Melrose Police Department is actively investigating after shots were fired at a home Tuesday night.

At 10:25 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 9, Melrose Police were dispatched to the area of Sunset Road after multiple reports of loud bangs. Responding officers searched the area upon arrival but could not locate anyone, or any clear indication of the source of the noise.

Yesterday morning, Melrose Police received an anonymous tip from an individual indicating that they heard four gunshots in the area of 28 Carlida Road and observed a car fleeing the area at a high rate of speed. The person providing the tip also indicated there may be a shell casing in front of the home.

Melrose Police detectives responded to the area and located a .40 caliber handgun shell casing in the street. Through their preliminary investigation, detectives have determined that the shooting was not a random act and that there is no danger to the general public.

Carlida and Sunset Roads are adjacent to one another, and the four reports from Tuesday night and the anonymous tip Wednesday all relate to a single incident.

There were no injuries reported to police as a result of the incident.

The incident remains under active investigation by Melrose Police, Massachusetts State Police and the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office, with assistance from the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms.
