Melrose Police and Fire, along with National Grid, are on scene at 1028 Main Street — near the intersection of Main Street and Pearl Street — investigating a smoking man hole.

At 8:11 a.m., Melrose Police received a report of a smoking man hole cover on the sidewalk of the southbound side of Main Street.

National Grid is evaluating the situation, and during work, Main Street — from Franklin Square to Boardman Avenue — is closed to through traffic.

Police are directing trucks and buses through that area of Main Street, but all other motorists are advised to seek alternatives routes if they’re looking to get to the center of town or Wakefield.
