Melrose Police Officer Saves Lost Pig Found Wandering on Street

MELROSE — The call may not have come through a ham radio, but one Melrose Police Officer made hay of an unusual situation in a city neighborhood.

On the morning of May 10, after Melrose Police received multiple reports of a pot-bellied big wandering around Main Street near Billy’s Roast Beef & Seafood, Officer William O’Donnell went on the hunt.

Officer O’Donnell located the female, 40-pound pig on Main Street around 8 a.m. He was able to calm the frightened animal and eventually pet her and pick up her up.

He then penned the pig in a resident’s backyard until Animal Control Officer Coral Hope arrived on scene to wine and dine the swine with strawberries and carrots.

Officer O’Donnell was glad he was able to get to the pig before she was injured by passing traffic and didn’t even mind that the pig hogged the spotlight.

“This just goes to show that you never know what your next call will be,” Chief Lyle said. “Officer O’Donnell is an animal lover and he was the perfect person to respond in this situation.”

Later that day, the owners, who live not far from Main Street, were reunited with their pig.

That’ll do, pig.
