Melrose Police Respond to Suspicious Package at Post Office

MELROSE — Chief Michael L. Lyle reports that the Melrose Police Department responded to a suspicious package this afternoon at the Post Office, but cleared the scene a short time later, finding no threat to public safety.

Around 12:30 p.m., police received a report from the postal police that there was a suspicious package left in the blue mail drop box between the Post Office and City Hall on Essex Street.

Melrose Police and Fire responded to the scene, along with the Massachusetts State Police Bomb Squad to investigate. Out of an abundance of caution, City Hall and the Post Office were evacuated and instructed to close for the remainder of day.

The package was removed, evaluated and determined to be a metal container wrapped in tinfoil. Police deemed the area safe at approximately 1:30 p.m.

“We were able to quickly respond and determine that the public was not in danger,” Chief Lyle said. “Thank you to the Melrose Fire Department and State Police for their assistance, along with City Hall and the Post Office for their immediate cooperation. Safety is always our number one priority.”
