Melrose Police to Host Cyber Safety Community Night for Parents

MELROSE — Chief Michael L. Lyle reports that the Melrose Police Department will host a cyber safety Community Night geared toward parents later this month.

On Oct. 28, from 6-8 p.m. at the Milano Senior Center, 201 West Foster St., residents are invited to attend the event that will provide information and tips to adults about how to keep children safe while they’re online.

The event is part of the department’s monthly community meetings initiative, where police and other city and state officials gather to discuss a prevalent topic with residents to advise them on the best safety protocols.

Chief Lyle, Officer Dan Ehlers, School Resource Officer Jim Applegate and a Massachusetts State Police trooper from the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force will be present to lead the discussion on Oct. 28.

Topics will include bullying online, how to protect children and their information when using social media applications and games, and more.

“It’s important that children know whatever they put online doesn’t go away,” Chief Lyle said. “We think this will be a beneficial meeting for parents to help keep their students safe.”
