The Melrose Police Department is warning residents to be wary of an increase in phone scammers, or ” phishers” pretending to be a Grandchild in trouble.  The elderly population is often targeted and the caller may know the name of a grandchild or will trick the resident into revealing the grandchild’s name.  A story of panic is then given, maybe seeking bail money or money for car troubles or passport issues.  Residents should be cautious when answering phone calls from people asking for money to be transferred somewhere via money gram or wire services.  The Melrose Police Department stresses that resident should be vigilant and contact the Melrose Police Department if any suspicious calls are received at (781) 665-1212.
