Melrose Police Respond to False Report of Active Shooter

No Danger to Public

Some members of the media have inquired about this incident:

MELROSE — Police Chief Michael L. Lyle reports that the Melrose Police Department responded to a home on Prospect Street on Sunday evening after receiving a computer-generated phone call from an unknown caller stating that there were “shots fired” and an “active shooter” at the location.

Officers quickly determined that there was no danger or threat to the residence.

“It appears that someone was trying to elicit a police response by making a false report,” Chief Lyle said. “We take incidents like this very seriously, and will conduct a thorough investigation.”

The incident is under investigation by the Melrose Police Department.
