Melrose Police Identify Suspect Involved In Bicycle Theft

MELROSE — Police Chief Michael L. Lyle reports that the Melrose Police Department has identified the suspect who allegedly stole a bicycle from a business in the city earlier this month.

DEREK DUVAL, AGE 42, OF LYNN will be summonsed to Malden District Court for Larceny Over $250 (bicycle).

On July 13, around 2 p.m., police responded to Promax Supply, 142 Franklin St., to take a report of a past larceny. A man informed an officer that his boss had a Trek Marlin 5 bicycle stolen from the front of the building on July 8 at approximately 6 p.m. The man had several still photos of the suspect and a security video from the business.

After releasing the images to the public, the department received numerous tips identifying DUVAL as the suspect. Police used the New England State Police Information Network to obtain the suspect’s home address, and along with information provided by multiple parties, were able to contact DUVAL by phone.

On July 17, DUVAL arrived at the Melrose Police Department and returned the bicycle.

“I would like to thank the public and the media for assisting us in our investigation,” Chief Lyle said. “With their help we were able to identify, locate and charge the suspect, who willingly returned the stolen property.”

These are allegations. All suspects are considered innocent until proven guilty.
