Melrose Police Department to Host Coffee with Cop Event This Week

MELROSE — Chief Michael L. Lyle is pleased to announce that the Melrose Police Department is holding a Coffee with a Cop event as part of National Community Policing Week.

President Barack Obama declared Oct. 2-8 as National Community Policing Week to strengthen the bonds between police officers and communities by encouraging people to engage in positive dialogue and interactions with their public safety officers.

WHEN

Thursday, Oct. 6 from 5-7 p.m.

WHERE

Bruegger’s Bagels, 496 Main St.

WHO

  • Chief Michael L. Lyle
  • Melrose Police Officers

WHAT

Members of the Melrose Police Department invite residents to join them for light conversation over a cup of jo at their Coffee with a Cop event —  a nationwide movement started by police departments to provide a relaxed, welcoming environment for community members to meet officers and talk about what’s going on in their cities and towns.

“This is great opportunity for citizens to come out and speak to members of their police department about topics and issues that are important to them,” Chief Lyle said. “We’re certainly looking forward to interacting with the community in a relaxed environment and encourage all who are interested to attend.”

About Coffee with a Cop:

Coffee With a Cop began in Hawthorne, Calif. in 2011 as a result of police officers brainstorming ways to better interact with their community. They developed a simple plan to break down the barriers that have been built between police officers and citizens — have a cup of coffee, discuss what’s on your mind, ask questions and make suggestions that could better the community.

Since its creation, Coffee With a Cop events have been held in more than 2,000 communities in 49 states. It is regarded as one of the most successful community oriented policing programs in the United States.
