Melrose Police Provide Storm Update, Advise Residents to Stay off the Roads

MELROSE — Chief Michael L. Lyle and the Melrose Police Department have received several reports of storm-related damage, and first responders along with city officials are working to ensure residents remain safe during the ongoing nor’easter.

A powerful storm hit Melrose in the early hours of Friday morning and will continue into Saturday. Heavy rain, with a chance of snow is expected, along with winds gusting up to 55 mph that could cause power outages.

The Melrose Police Department has already received numerous reports of trees down, and high winds even caused a traffic light on Main Street at Emerson Street to be ripped from the ground and knocked over.

On Glen Street, near the Roosevelt School, a tree fell on top of a vehicle. The female driver was not injured and was able to get out on her own.

Department of Public Works employees are working throughout the city to ensure debris is cleared from the roads and that streets remain passable.

“This is not an average New England storm,” Chief Lyle said. “If you don’t have to be outside, please remain indoors. If you must go out, be aware of your surroundings. Always assume that downed wires are live and report any hazards you see to public safety officials. As always, in an emergency, dial 911.”

Additionally, the Melrose Police Department advises residents to follow several important safety tips:

DURING THE STORM

• Be sure to have batteries for flashlights and battery-powered lanterns to use in the event of a power outage. If you must use candles, keep them away from anything flammable and do not leave them unattended.
• Keep cell phones charged.
• Stay off the roads and stay indoors, if possible.
• If power goes out during the storm, contact National Grid at 800-465-1212.
• To report a gas leak, contact National Grid at 800-233-5325.
• If you have an emergency call 911.

AFTER THE STORM

• Clear any debris from storm drains near your home to allow water to drain.
• Do not pump water from sump pumps into the road. The water can freeze and cause hazardous conditions if the temperature drops.
• Do not go near or drive over any downed power lines.
