Melrose Police Remind Drivers to Share the Road with Motorcycles

MELROSE — As motorcyclists hit the road this season, Chief Michael L. Lyle and the Melrose Police Department remind drivers to share the road.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that in 2013, there were 4,668 motorcyclists killed in motor vehicle traffic crashes, and an estimated 88,000 who were injured.

“Now that the weather has warmed up, motorcycles are a popular mode of transportation for both residents and this department,” Chief Lyle said. “Motorcyclists have the same rights as drivers, so please be cognizant of their presence on the road. We would certainly hate to see any accidents or injuries this year.”

To prevent accidents and fatalities, Chief Lyle recommends that drivers and motorcyclists follow several safety tips outlined by the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles.
