*Joint Press Release* Melrose Police/Schools Respond to Bomb Threat

No Danger to Community — School Cleared by Police

MELROSE – Police Chief Michael L. Lyle and Superintendent Cyndy Taymore report that the Melrose Public Schools was one of many school districts around Massachusetts to receive an anonymous bomb threat this morning.

Students have returned to classes at Melrose High School and Middle School after undergoing a temporary shelter in place. Melrose police and fire departments swept the complex and have determined there is no risk to students or faculty. The building’s security will be monitored throughout the day.

The school district followed an established protocol recommended by the Massachusetts State Police and Department of Fire Services, which included immediate notification to Melrose Police.

The bomb threat came via robo-call. At least one dozen other districts throughout the state received a similar call.

“I am pleased that the established security and response protocols worked flawlessly in this case,” Superintendent Taymore said. “The security and safety of our students, faculty, and staff is paramount, and we are grateful for the rapid and professional response of the Melrose Police and Fire Departments.”

Guidance staff is available to meet with concerned students, parents, or faculty throughout the day.

“We are aware that a number of districts have been threatened today and in recent months, and as law enforcement officers, we take each and every instance seriously,” Chief Lyle said. “We will continue to work with our state and federal partners to aggressively pursue those responsible.”
