Melrose Police Arrest Man for Driving Under the Influence of Drugs

MELROSE — Police Chief Michael L. Lyle reports that the Melrose Police Department arrested a man for driving a motor vehicle while under the influence of drugs yesterday after he nearly ran down two officers and crashed into a fire hydrant. A Melrose police officer was injured in the incident.

WILLIAM DOTOLO, AGE 34, OF EAST FALMOUTH is charged with:

  • Operating Under the Influence of Drugs
  • Possession of A Class A Drug
  • Reckless Operation of A Motor Vehicle
  • Leaving the Scene of an Accident Causing Personal Injury

On Monday, June 15, around 3 p.m., an officer working a road detail on Lebanon Street witnessed a Black 2011 Infiniti G25 traveling northbound cross over into the southbound lane.

The vehicle drove in the direction of police, and two officers had to jump out of the way to avoid the oncoming car. One reported an injury and was transported to an area hospital.

The vehicle then hit a curb and crashed into a fire hydrant, causing significant front end damage, but DOTOLO continued driving and fled from the area with multiple flat tires.

Police units located the vehicle stopped on Porter Street with the front airbags deployed.

DOTOLO was arrested at the scene. Upon searching the vehicle, an officer found a quantity of brown powdered substance believed to be heroin and drug paraphernalia.

“We are very fortunate that no one was seriously injured by the reckless actions of this person under the influence of drugs who decided to get behind the wheel,” Chief Lyle said. “I commend the work of our Melrose Police Officers who located and arrested this dangerous individual.”

These are allegations. All suspects are considered innocent until proven guilty.
