Melrose Police Department to hold 2nd Junior Police Academy

MELROSE — Police Chief Michael L. Lyle announces that the Melrose Police Department will hold its second annual Junior Police Academy this summer.

Two free sessions will be offered. The first is scheduled for July 6-10 and the second, July 13-17. Both will be held at the Melrose Veterans Memorial Middle School with outdoor activities on Fred Green Field. Classes will run from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. daily.

Participants can expect to complete physical training, including stretching, calisthenics, running, and competitive squad games aimed to test focus, speed and team work.

Students will also spend time in the classroom learning about investigations, patrol procedures, traffic, bullying, drugs, and cyber safety to educate children on the dangers they could encounter when using technology.

“The Junior Academy program we held last summer was a huge success,” Chief Lyle said. “Participants learned a variety of useful skills while experiencing a taste of what life would be like as a police officer.”

Prior to last year, the class hadn’t been offered since the early 1980s. With assistance from the community, the Melrose Police Department relaunched the program for girls and boys ages 10-13. Sessions are taught by Melrose police officers and members of the Melrose Alliance Against Violence.

Last years 48 students signed up for the classes. Chief Lyle and the Melrose Police Department would like to thank several community partners who made the program possible: Mayor Rob Dolan and Mike Lindstrom, Superintendent Cyndy Taymore, Tom Brow, Melrose High School Principal Brent Conway, Kevin Cronin, Jim O’Hare, Rebecca Mooney and the Melrose Alliance Against Violence, Steve and Scott Longmuir from Stephen’s Towing, Jen Kelly and the Melrose Substance Abuse Coalition, the T Stop in Wakefield, Josh Brown, Ben Quinn, Whole Foods, Rite Aid, Shaw’s Supermarket, CVS, Vicki from D’Amici’s Bakery, Scott Drago and South Pole Slush.

“We’re glad we are able to offer the program again this year for the youth in our community who have expressed an early interest in law enforcement,” Chief Lyle said.

To register for this year’s class, download the form, print it out and return it to the station or email it to Sergeant Chuck Byrne or School Resource Officer Jim Applegate. Contact the Melrose Police Department at 781-665-1212 for more information.
